Jageshwar is located at an altitude of 1,870 meters above sea level, and is located at a 37 kilometers from Almora. There isn’t a definitive date of the the Jageshwar temple group however, as per the ASI they are part of the post-Gupta and premedieval periods and are thought to be around 2500 years old. The temples are situated in the time period of to the eighth century (early Katyuri Dynasty) to the 18th century (Chand Dynasty).
The temples were remodeled during the time of Katyuri King Shalivahandev. The temple has an inscribed image from the Malla Kings on the temple’s premises showing their dedication to Jageshwar. It is believed that the Katyuri Kings also contributed villages to temple priests to maintain the temple. They also donated villages to the temple priests. There is a belief there was a belief that Guru Adi Shankaracharya was a visitor to Jageshwar and restored and rebuilt many temples prior to departing to go to Kedarnath.
