Mythology about Harsil

In Hindu stories, Jalandhar, the king of demons, defeated the gods with his power. Whenever the devas attempted to take down him, his power would grow because his beloved wife Vrinda would beg Lord Vishnu to ensure her husband’s victory. The gods then turned to Lord Vishnu for assistance and asked that he vow Vrinda to her husband, since he was only defeated if the wife he loved committed adultery in the marriage.

Vishnu employed his charms to lure Vrinda however her love and devotion to her husband did not shake her morals. In search of a way out the Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Jalandhar and swore to violate Vrinda’s vow of chastity. Jalandhar was killed by Shiva after realizing that Jalandhar was dead, Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu that he would transform into a stone, and disperse throughout the territory of the king Jalandhar. Thus, the area was named Harsil.

The other folklore explains of the fact that both rivers Jalandhari as well as Bhagirathi always battled one another to show their strength. The battle caused turbulence as well as fear in the surrounding areas The people then offered prayers to Lord Vishnu to solve the issue. Vishnu was attentive to their prayers and changed into a Sila or stone. He positioned himself in the middle of the confluence of the Jalandhari as well as Bhagirathi rivers. Thus, the location was called Harshil that literally refers to Lord Vishnu by the shape of an igneous rock.
