The mythology of Gangotri has two stories connected to Gangotri The first claims that King Sagar who was the great grandpa of King Bhagirath sought to expand his kingdom, and for this it was his intention to perform the ‘ Ashwamedha Yogagya‘. While he was doing the Yagya, his horse was free to roam around the whole empire. If the soldiers were unable to locate the horse the 60,000 children of the King Sagar were enlisted to locate the horse. When they were searching for the horse and the King’s sons, the sons of Sagar found a location in which the sage Kapila was sitting in meditation and saw that the horse was to the sage. They interrupted the sage’s meditation in the hopes of taking the horse.

The Sage Kapila who was boiling in pots made all the children of King Sagar into ashes, cursed the kings to be redeemed only when the ashes meet the holy the river Ganga, (which used to flow only in heavens). So King Bhagirath made a serious vow to beg the river Ganga to ensure that his ancestors might attain’moksha which means salvation. The penance lasted over a thousand years. the King Bhagirath was able appease the river of holy Ganga by allowing it to descend into Earth from the skies above.

The other legend says that, in response to King Bhagirath’s prayers Ganga decided to descend to Earth while also announcing that her torrential downpour would end the life of the Earth. Thus Lord Shiva kept the soaring river Ganga with his gorgeous locks in order to save human race. The place that Jalmagna Shivlinga lies is the site in which Lord Shiva received the goddess Ganga with his locks. When the Ganga began to flow, the Ganga began flowing across Earth and the Gangotri temple was built to protect her.
