Binsar was the capital city of summer in The Chand Dynasty who ruled over the Kumaon region from the 11th to 17th century A.D. The city is proudly home to the old Shiva temple known as Bineshwar Mahadevwhich was constructed in the the 16th century A.D. by Raja Kalyan Chand of the Chand Dynasty.
The name Binsar is taken from the word ‘ Bin-sar that literally means “without ahead. There is a local legend that says that once there was a fierce fight by the King of Binsar as well as Golu Devta the local god. There was a certain skepticism, Golu Devta was beheaded and his trunk was found on Gairad Dana Golu, near Binsar National Park and his head was located at Kaparkahan close to Binsar. Both places are home to the old temples built by Golu Devta.
Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary was setup in 1988. It’s located over 45.59 kilometers, and is abundant in its wildlife and flora. The sanctuary is designated as an Significant Bird Area by Bird Life International since it has more than 200 different species of birds found in the sanctuary, which includes Forktail, Blackbirds, Laughing Thrush, Kalij Pheasant, Nuthatches Parakeets, and Monal.
This extensive Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is the habitat of 200 species of birds, Barking Deer, Himalayan bear as well as fox, leopard, the musk deer, the langur, flying squirrel, porcupine Chital, Jungle Cat, etc.
A ticket for entry worth Rs. 40 per person or an entry fee of Rs. 50 for cars has to be payed at the entry point of Binsar. Electricity is not available in Binsar area to avoid the exploitation and destruction of nature.
