History of Almora

Established by Chand Rajas, and further developed under The British, Almora had been an important region of culture and politics in the Kumaon for over 400 years.

In the 9th century AD prior to its creation Almora, the city of Almora was in the hands by the Katyur Dynasty. The region surrounding Almora was ruled by the Katyuri King known as Baichaldeo. The king donated a substantial portion of his land to an Gujrati Brahmin named Sri Chand Tiwari. Then, during the Chand the dynasty’s rule Almora was established by Kalyan Chand in 1560 at the spot was referred to as Alam Nagar‘. Under the Chand reign Almora was renamed Rajapur.

It is interesting to note that historians have discovered a number of copper plates with the “Rajpur” written on them. Almora was under the Chand dynasty’s control up to the end of 18th century. It was annexed to the Gorkhas in 1790. They took over the city for the following 24 years. Following the Gurkha conflict that erupted between 1814 and 1616 and 1814-1816, the British took over Almora and further developed it.
