The town in the sky of Devprayag is situated at an altitude at 830m above sea-level. Devprayag is the most prestigious Prayag which is the sacred confluence Alaknanda River, from here that the confluence between Alaknanda with the Bhagirathi River is referred to as Ganga.
The town is also the seat of the pundits who are part of Badrinath Dham. The significance of Devprayag is Godly confluence, as “Dev” God of man and “Prayag” is a synonym for confluence.
This town in Devprayag was destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1803 but was rebuilt afterward. There is an old Raghunath Ji temple, which was constructed on top of the confluence. It could be a thousand years old.
Devprayag can also be the residence that belonged to one of the last Acharya, Pundit Chakradhar Joshi who was an academic of Astronomy and Astrology who set up the observatory “Nakshatra Vedh” in 1946. The observatory is located on the top of a mountain named Dashrathanchal at Devprayag The well-equipped observatory includes two telescopes as well as numerous books that detail different studies conducted in the field of Astrology. It houses around 300 manuscripts dating to the year 1677 A.D., collected from different parts of the country. The observatory also has old pieces of equipment, like Surya Ghati, Dhruv Ghati and many more that show the advancement of Indian Astronomy.

Devprayag is considered to be the home of meditation that Lord Rama and his father King Dasharatha. It is believed that the time that Bhagirathi performed a severe penance to ask Ganga to go down into Earth Then, Ganga together with the other 33 Koti gods and goddesses returned to Earth by choosing Devprayag as their holy place of worship.
Devprayag is also in which the Alaknanda is also where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet. In Hindu mythology it states there is another place of confluence of the Saraswati river, which originates in Mana Village in Badrinath, and flowing through at the foot of Shri Raghunath Ji in Raghunath Temple in Devprayag. It is also possible to find his footprints from Lord Rama in the temple of ” Ram Kunda” in Devprayag.
Devprayag is located on the National Highway NH58, which is the main road that connects Delhi and Badrinath as well as Mana Pass in Uttarakhand near the Indo-Tibet border. So, all vehicles and buses that transport tourists to New Delhi to Badrinath via Haridwar and Rishikesh during the pilgrimage time of summer travel through Devprayag in the direction of Joshimath as well as further to the north. Rishikesh is the most important beginning point for road travel to Devprayag and buses run regularly from the Rishikesh Bus Station to Devprayag. The distance by road between Rishikesh up to Devprayag is 74km (46 miles).
