“There are more than 50 species of mammals , including the critically threatened Asian Elephant and Tiger found in the Park. Alongside tigers, leopards, Himalayan Sloth, black bear bear Civet, Marten, Jackal, Hyena etc, it is believed that there are over 350 Asian elephants living in the park. The Goral (Mountain Goat) A characteristic mammal of the lower Himalayas , is abundant in the steep valleys that make up the Shivalik hills. Three different species of deer are found namely Sambhar Spotted Deer (Cheetal) and Barking Deer (Kakar) as well as animals such as Wild Boar, Neel Gai. Langoor, Black Napped Hare, Jungle cat etc are too found. More than 300 species of birds are found in Rajaji National Park, making it a significant birding zone within the country. Around 90 species migrate, including Pochards, Gulls, Mallards, Teals and Shellducks that frequent the bodies of water at Bhimgora as well as Virbhadra Barrage and wetlands of the river Ganga. The birds that live there include Pea Fowl and Jungle Fowl as well as species of Parakeets Woodpeckers as well as Kingfishers. Barbets, Thrushes and Finches and many more. Great Pied Hornbill has a place of distinction among the many Hornbills that are found throughout the Park.”
The renowned Rajaji Tiger Reserve is both an national park as well as the tiger reserve. It is renowned for its elephant sanctuary as there are about 600 elephants within Rajaji. It also has the presence of 16 tigers and 250 leopards which will soon outnumber the leopards.
Rajaji Tiger Reserve (earlier Rajaji National Park) is situated in the Shivalik range of the Himalayas and is spread across 820 kilometers. It extends three districts in Uttarakhand: Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. It’s now an additional Tiger Serve of Uttarakhand after Corbet.
The park was created in 1983 through the merger of three sanctuary sanctuaries: Rajaji Sanctuary and National park (estd. 1948) Motichur sanctuary (estd. 1964) and Chilla sanctuary (estd. 1977). The 20th April, 2015 marks the 20th day that the name was modified into Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
It is believed that the Rajaji Tiger Reserve has received the distinction to be one of the the second reserve for tigers in Uttarakhand following Corbett National Park. Corbett National Park. In the past, it was known under its name Rajaji National Park. The tiny town of Chilla located about 13 kilometers northeast of Haridwar is the place to start to visit the reserve. You can get an informational brochure, pay fees for entry and book an exciting jeep safari at the Forest Ranger’s Office, close to the guesthouse for tourists in Chilla.

Apart from that the day and night-time facility in Rajaji National Park is also available. To book this, only a manual booking options are available. Permits to enter Rajaji and Gypsy is accessible in the Gates of this national park. The rest house in the forest of Rajaji National Parks are available in Asharodi, Motichur, Chila, Ranipur and Beri Bada. To stay in these forest rest houses, you need obtain a permission from the Park Director’s Office, Dehradun at first. Then, you must complete all necessary booking requirements.
The park usually opens at 0600 in the morning. It it is open until around 1100 hrs in the early morning. But, visitors who have booked the full day safari can have the option of spending time from 1130 to 1300 hours in any of the other homes in the forest. They also go bird watching. In the afternoon, time slots for the park usually run between 1430 and 1730. Based on the season, the timings vary locally, which the forest officials from Rajaji National Park notify.
All Safari’s are booked through the Forest Department and it is entirely at the discretion the department. Please note that Elephant Safari has been prohibited in Rajaji National Park.
Jungle Safari: Rajaji Tiger Reserve is the second tiger reserve in Uttarakhand following Jim Corbett and is home to many species of animals including Bengal Tiger, Asian the elephant and leopard and sloth bear. Himalayan Black Bear, King Cobra, Jackal, Barking Deer Goral, sambhar to mention some.

It is also a bird-watcher’s paradise, as 315 species of bird species present within the Park. The most famous birds are peafowl, woodpeckers and pheasants. Hornbill barbets, kingfishers, and which are complemented by a variety of migratory birds during Winter. The rivers that flow through the Park are home to a variety of fish species like mahseer and trout.
Migratory Birds: In winter, there are many migrating birds that arrive here from various parts of the United States and even from overseas. Ruddy Shelduck, Mallard, Red Crested Pochard, Larger Cormorant, Common Pochard, Pintail, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, etc. are a few of the water birds that are frequently observed in the Park in winter time within Rajaji National Park.
Future Updates on Extension
In accordance with the guidelines by the Tiger Conservative Authority of India The Rajaji National Park will be the main part within the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. About 300 km2 comprised of Shyampur range of the Haridwar forest division, as well as portions in the Kotdwar along with Laldhang forest division, which functions in the capacity of a buffer zone, will soon be part of the Tiger Project.
